Can students participate in other activities and be in band?
Yes. Most students in band participate in other activities, i.e.., drama, debate, football, other athletic activities, etc.
Do all students have to be in the Marching Band?
Yes, all band students are expected to participate fully in all Marching and Concert Band activities. In the event of a conflicting SCHOOL activity, i.e.., football, a suitable schedule will be worked out with the sponsors of both activities.
When does the band practice during the summer?
Yes, see schedule sections for more information. We realize that some students will be on vacation during the summer. Please contact the Mr. McArthur by E-mail or letter if your will need to miss practice during the summer.
What is the after school schedule during the school year ?
The band practices 3 days a week during Marching season from 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. These are generally held on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, but are adjusted for Holidays, weather, etc. This schedule is maintained until after Marching Contest(mid-late October), then the band generally practices two days a week from 3:15p .m.-5:00 p.m. until the end of football season. For the remainder of the fall semester, there are 2 or three extra rehearsals to prepare for Winter Concerts. During the Spring semester, students normally practice one day a week in January and February, then sometimes two days a week in March and April, depending on which band the student is assigned. Occasionally, students will have required music playoffs, help sessions, etc. that will need to be done after school.
What is the Color guard?
The color guard, as the name says, provides color for the band's show. They do some dancing, do routines with flags, and use props to make he show more interesting. Many girls in the color guard play instruments, but it is not necessary to play an instrument to be in the color guard.
How are band classes assigned?
The band program is made up of three Concert Bands. Assignment to a band is done by audition. Students will be assigned a band class based on his/her musical ability. During the fall semester, Color guard members and percussionists will be assigned to another class. Students re-audition for bands and the end of the fall semester, then are placed in one of the three band classes for the Spring semester. Students are expected to maintain the standards and follow the requirements of the class to which they are assigned.

Season. It's not as hard as you might think!
How am I graded in band?
You are grade mostly on your participation, attendance, assignments, etc. You will have assignments on scales, music, and etudes each 6 weeks. It is easy to make a good grade in band unless you miss assignments or do not show up for rehearsals or performances. Punctuality is part of your grade.Also, proper etiquette is part of your performance grade at concerts and other performing events.
Are their any other band classes?
There is an ensemble class for students to take in addition to the band class. You must be currently enrolled in a band class to take the ensemble class. This is a class for students to use for practice, to do some jazz band activities, and to have some study time. This class can be taken as your schedule permits. There are also Music Theory classes available some years.
Do you take trips?
The Stratford Band takes trips each year. One year is an in-state trip and the next year is an out of state trip. In the past, the band has taken trips to Winter Park, Colorado, Orlando, Florida; San Antonio, and many other places.
What do I have to do to be in band?
Sign up with the counselor and being willing to participate.
What if I have never played an instrument before?
Some students enter the band without having played before. Since
most of the students in the band have played an instrument for at least 3 years, it is probably going to be necessary for you to take private lessons to catch up.
